Champagne Shortage Looming?

You might want to think about purchasing your New Year’s Eve champagne now. A difficult season of early frost, mildew and rot from hail storms has caused an alarmingly low crop yield in the vineyards of Champagne, France. To meet expected demand, growers and vintners are going to have to dip heavily into their reserves.

Here are a few statistics to consider from decanter.com regarding the monitored vineyards:

  • 99% had mildew symptoms.
  • 65% showed at least minor rot outbreaks.
  • 34% had more than 10% loss in yield due to mildew.
  • 4% had more than half the crop affected.

I say stock up now – why wait?  Once you do get your bubbly stock replenished, try out a few of these champagne-based beverages:

Tangerine Champagne
Blueberry-Ginger Bellini

Enjoy!
