“It helps immerse yourself in what you potentially want to do. Being involved, learning firsthand and observing the craft and absorbing all you can, makes it easier to define what you want. It will also ultimately make you a better Chef. Culinary school, or even a single class, is a great bet too.”

Purchasing Class Comes to an End – Food Purchasing Certification Earned

Yet another semester has come to an end.  Now that my Purchasing, Storage and Handling class has wrapped up. I am one step closer to completing my degree in Hospitality Management – Culinary Arts.  Also, I am now certified in Food Purchasing from the National Restaurant Association!

A grade

I am pleased to report that I earned a final grade of an A in this class. The highlight was a taste-test project in which I corralled my family into tasting four sets of similar products and rating the winner of each set.  You can read more about each taste test here:

From this project, I learned that a higher price doesn’t always mean better quality and that the value of a product is subjective, and can also depend on how you plan to use it.

I now have three months of glorious summer days off before my next class starts. It is called “Introduction to Event Planning” and in it, I will learn all about the fine art of planning successful events.  Stay tuned for back-to-school posts starting up again in September. Meanwhile. I will continue to post my favorite recipes and reviews of restaurants and culinary-related books and events.

One Lovely Blog Award!

Food Mingle Blog has been awarded the One Lovely Blog Award!

lovelyMany thanks to Gloria over at Plate it Up Recipes for nominating Food Mingle Blog for the One Lovely Blog Award.  Gloria’s blog is awesome – you should check it out.  She believes in the dictum “The belly rules the mind.”  Thank you, Gloria for this lovely award!

The One Lovely Blog Award recipients are chosen by fellow bloggers who consider the winning blogs to be “lovely.”  It acknowledges bloggers who thoughtfully connect with their readers by sharing their stories in a beautiful way. The goal is to recognize the blogger and help them reach more readers.  Also, it requires that the blogger tells readers about themself and then nominate others for the award.

Here, are the rules:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and include a link to their blog.
  2. Share seven interesting things about yourself.
  3. Nominate at least 10 blogs of your choice (up to 15) for the award.
  4. Link to your nominees and let them know of their nomination, usually by commenting on one of their posts.
  5. List the rules.

Seven Things About Me:

  1. I am a software product manager by day and a culinary arts student in the evening. I am working towards an Associate degree in Hospitality Management, with a concentration in Food Service and Culinary Arts; I expect to graduate sometime in 2017.
  2. I have been a member of Toastmasters International for over ten years; it is a public speaking and leadership organization.  It has been a great way to increase my public speaking confidence.  I am working towards their highest designation (Distinguished Toastmaster) and hope to achieve it in 2018.
  3. I am the youngest of four children; my three siblings are older brothers.
  4. On my blog, I use the image of a pineapple to welcome readers. The pineapple is associated with the return of ships from extended voyages, and it is an emblem of welcome and hospitality.
  5. A few of my favorite things include:
    • Flower: tulip (followed closely by pink roses)
    • Comedy movie: My Cousin Vinny
    • Seafood: scallops (seared to perfection)
    • Bible verse: Psalm 46:10
    • Sport: tennis (favorite player – Andre Agassi)
  6. I still have all of my wisdom teeth, but that doesn’t mean that I’m wise!
  7. I can’t snap my fingers on either hand – I have no idea why.

No one who cooks, cooks alone. Even at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook writers.”
